Aheda - The Guardian

Launching a Palestinian food truck

I’ve known Aheda since 2019 when I worked at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. We’ve since become as close as family. So documenting this launch journey was super special. When we set up a Gofundme two years ago I honestly didn’t believe that a legitimate food truck would come to fruition - there are SO MANY BARRIERS in place for Aheda as a Palestinian refugee. Yet succeed she did.

However, both of us were very conscious of the ‘successful refugee’ trope. So we included some moments that show the pain caused by Israel’s genocidal regime and Australia’s barbaric refugee intake program.

This is what Aheda asked for the caption to be when I posted the video to my Instagram:

Okay so thank you to everyone who has supported me. Some people have been coming every Saturday for the falafel wrap and the chicken. One lady comes early morning and is the first person always. That’s nice. I see that people are very happy that I have my dream and now they can try my food.

Directed, edited and shot by me in collaboration with Aheda. Thanks to The Guardian Australia team for their support.

This heartbreaking story is shared by hundreds of people seeking asylum who do not have a safe place to sleep tonight.

Our government intentionally excludes people seeking asylum from accessing safety nets such as Centrelink. During the pandemic when thousands of people found themselves reliant on JobKeeper payments, people seeking asylum were left out in the cold.
